What happens if I am not ready for B2 when I want to apply for ILR?
You do not have to apply for ILR on the first day you could. GOV.UK says that if you are already in the UK and need more time to prove your English, you may be able to extend your permission to stay, and then apply for ILR later.
Extending instead of settling
GOV.UK's English language guide says: if you are already in the UK, you may be able to extend your permission to stay so that you can prove your knowledge of English; check the guide for your current visa. On the Long Residence route, GOV.UK says that if you do not meet the English and Life in the UK requirements, you can apply to extend (fee £1,407). Rules differ by route, so check yours.
Do not apply with the wrong evidence
GOV.UK warns that a settlement application will be refused if you send the wrong qualifications. Applying without meeting the English requirement is not a way to buy time.
If you fail a test
GOV.UK says that in some cases you may be allowed to resit just the component you failed, depending on the provider's terms. Check them before you book.
A rare exception
Appendix KoLL has a narrow exception for some partners and dependants with at least 15 years' continuous permission, an A2 speaking and listening qualification and evidence from a qualified English teacher that they have tried but cannot yet reach B2. It is complicated; check GOV.UK or a regulated adviser before relying on it.
Plan ahead
If you apply before 26 March 2027 the level is B1 (see What if I apply before 26 March 2027?). Otherwise, start preparing early: How to prepare for B2. The free checker tells you whether you probably need the test.
